On June 28, 2009, President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras was forcibly removed from power in an apparent coup. Unlike many coups, however, this one was relatively unique in that it was not driven by a would-be-dictators power lust but by a desire to stop just such a thing from happening. You see, Mr. Zelaya had for some time been pushing a referendum that would enable him to "reform" the Honduran constitution to allow for re-election. Unfortunately for Mr. Zelaya, the Honduran constitution has ... Read More

In another stunning display of stupidity and partisanship, the Department of Justice has decided that the state of Georgia is violaing the constitution by checking social security numbers and drivers licenses of voters. Apparently the system had a disproportionate impact on minority voters. A fascinating, unrelated fact. Did you know that almost all of the 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States are minorities?

There are two views of the future of America. One is the oft-taught "melting pot." In this view, all immigrants integrate into society, each group contributing something unique and new to our national identity. The opposing view is that of the "salad bowl," in which the majority white citizens provide a base in which smaller ethnic and racial groups remain distinct and separate in the way that a tomato or cucumber remains distinct from other parts of the salad. Liberals tend to ... Read More

Quick Summary:
• Uses the Geneva Convention to highlight why former President Bush is not a War Criminal.
• Discusses the implications of coercive interrogation and government power and presents a possible compromise for the issue.
Since the images of the Abu Ghraib abuses were released, followed by the news of the CIA’s secret prisons and its enhanced interrogation techniques, there has been a fierce debate over the legality of the various measures involved. Republicans and Conservatives generally favor the techniques and insist that ... Read More

Below I have expanded the CIA's list of congressional members who were informed of Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (a.k.a Torture) before the information became general, public knowledge. I have amended it to include the party affiliation and home state of every individual. This list has not been confirmed by third party information as the Obama Administration has yet to order the release of more detailed, classified information on the briefings. Since the ... Read More

It's finals week here at college, so I don't have much time for posts, but I really needed to share this. Michael Savage, a conservative talk show host from San Francisco's KNEW, has been placed on a list of 22 people the British government will not allow into the country. British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith publicly released the names of 16 of these individuals, including Mr. Savage, saying that it was necessary so that people would "understand the sorts of values and sorts ... Loud Dobbs does a good job covering the details of the immigration bill moving through congress. This bill is probably one of the worst pieces of legislation I've seen in a while. As usual, the elitists in Washington think that 300 million people's wills should be directed in whichever way is most politically advantageous.
These provisions are ridiculous.
The United States government should put some effort into enforcing immigration policy as it exists. Border walls put in place in California have proven ... Read More

It's no secret that Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter has not been well liked by his state's Republican party as of late. A state senator since the 1980s, Specter's last primary in 2004 was not promising. Despite the public support of then President Bush-before the former president's popularity dropped like a stone- the long shot primary campaign of Representative Pat Toomey was able to narrow the race to 49-41%. Following the election, Specter resumed his mantle as one of the more "independent" (or ... Read More

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has been the subject of much controversy since Barack Obama elevated her to the national stage. As Homeland Security Secretary, her actions have drawn more attention as she made perhaps the biggest blunder yet of her career when her office released a report titled "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment.
The report was released April 7, 2009 and most commentators and news outlets covered it a week later on April 13, ... Read More
